Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects’ winning project is based on a simple yet forceful architectonic concept that has a distinct symbolic expression. The dormitory is formed as a circular building of 7 storeys that contains all communal facilities and encircles a large planted courtyard.
The cylindrical main shape is broken by 5 vertical cuts that both visually and functionally divide the building into sections and appear as open passages which allow access to the inner courtyard from outside the building.
Summary of the intentions of Lundgaard & Tranberg Architects:
To create a building that is in harmony with the present and future construction and landscape structures of the surrounding area, as well as having a pronounced independent identity
To make the building itself stand out as a distinctive symbol of the dormitory’s principal value of community
To ensure optimum overview and accessibility in every part of the dormitory
To achieve uniform and equal conditions for every apartment and apartment group in the building (a “democratic” dormitory)
To let the dormitory manifest itself within the surroundings by giving it an easily recognizable and characteristic architectonic expression
To accentuate essential lines of sight from the dormitory towards the surrounding cityscape and create spacious passages across the landscape between the two canals
To reach a structure that is simple and rational in a constructional / engineering perspective, yet still flexible in terms of spatial and expressive variation
